A new report highlights the staggering truth about wage inequality in Australia. Here’s what we need to do better
"The report also showed that we grossly underestimate just how much the big end of town out-earns the rest of us, with survey respondents thinking CEOs (of publicly listed companies) typically earned 7.1 times an average full-time salary. In fact the figure is a staggering 103 times! This is not purely an Australian phenomenon and we should spare a thought for the British and the Americans, where chief executives typically earn a mind-boggling 214 and 269 times the average person, respectively."

Political Polarization, Wage Inequality and Preferences for Redistribution∗

"For example, the actual ratio of CEO to average full-time worker pay in the US is 269, whereas people thought it was 18 and would prefer it only to be 5. This widespread underestimation of wage inequality in both the distribution builder and traditional questions occurred across the political spectrum, countries, and income levels."
"Even when many people are made aware of the full extent of wage disparities, this does not translate into higher support for policies to reduce inequality. This is consistent with recent work suggesting many people’s preferences for redistribution are primarily shaped by concerns about fairness in the income generation process rather than by a snapshot of the distribution of resources in their country (Alesina et al., 2018). The exception to our overall result is our finding about the strong, positive treatment effect among far-right respondents."
"This study covers six high-income countries: Australia, France, Japan, Sweden, the UK, and the US. We selected this diverse set of countries so that we could adequately speak to the external validity of the findings."
